RENO, NV ± Katherine Dew soloed March 14th at Nevada Soaring. Kat is shown with her instructor “Skimmer” Pete Casti in front of the club’s L23. Kat is a staff sergeant in the Nevada Air National Guard in Reno, NV. Her dream is to pursue a flying career, hopefully in the military.

WETUMPKA, AL ± Frank Jordan flew his first glider solo on March 29 in the Alabama Wing, Civil Air Patrol’s, LET L-23 at the Wetumpka Municipal Airport, 08A. Frank is congratulated by his instructor, CFIG Jim Locke. Randy Crowder served as ground crew and Robert Griffith was tow pilot. Frank plans to finish his transition to private glider rating and contribute to CAP glider operations in the Alabama Wing. His flight may be seen on You- Tube by searching for the “AL Wing Soaring” channel.

FRONT ROYAL, VA ± Skyline Soaring Club members Chris Carswell (left) and Mario Simula (right) both passed their private glider pilot checkrides on March 21, 2015. They’re shown here being congratulated by visiting examiner John Molumphy (center) in front of the club’s ASK-21. This was an add-on rating for Chris and an initial rating for Mario, which will also earn him an equivalent license when he returns to Italy in a couple of years. Congratulations to a pair of highly skilled and motivated new glider pilots!

WELLINGTON, CO ± Congratulations to Colorado Soaring Association’s Dave Warrender (center) for receiving his commercial glider add-on rating at Owl Canyon airport. Dave, a United Airlines captain, is pictured with his instructor, Howie Stetser (left) and the examiner Quay Snyder (right).

MINDEN, NV ± On April 9, 2015, Civil Air Patrol Cadet William Eric Strotz made his first solo flight at 14 years of age in the Minden squadron’s Blanik L-23. His CAP instructor was Michael Mitton. Will’s father, a Boeing 777 captain and CAP pilot, was on hand to see the flight and watch his son make a perfect landing. The Nevada Wing of the CAP has an active glider program and provides orientation flights and dual instruction to cadets and senior members using winch, auto, and aero.

WAIALUA, HI ± On 16 March 2015, Atsuna Masuda soloed in G-103 at the Hana Hou Air, Hawaii Glider School.
