It reminds me of the saying ‘Golf is not a matter of life and death to these people. It’s more important than that.’ ” Tom Watson In 2010 Pinehurst Resort hired Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw to restore the characteristics of Ross’ design. Working from Ross’ original plans and historic photographs of the course Coore & Crenshaw took the course back to how No. 2 would have appeared when Ross roamed the fairways. The fairways as the #1 Inland Golf Course in America. It has served as the site of more single golf championships than any course in America and, in 2014, will make history again, becoming the first to serve as host to the U.S. Open and U.S. Women’s Open Championships in consecutive weeks. Pinehurst has been called the St. Andrews of America, this link between St. Andrews Links and Pinehurst Resort is strong, beginning with Donald Ross, who came to Pinehurst in 1900 after studying under Old Tom Morris in St. Andrews and stayed until his death in 1948. In 2005, sand was ceremoniously placed from the Road Hole bunker into the 18th greenside bunker on Pinehurst No. 2. The Pinehurst Resort is among the game’s most coveted destination for the majors it hosts, the pure golf atmosphere, which is impossible to duplicate, and the hospitality of its people. “I have great memories of visiting Pinehurst in the old days. For a kid from Latrobe to visit the golf capital in the world was a special treat.” Arnold Palmer have been widened and made more firm, producing more roll off the tee. A reward to tee shots running true but a penalty to shots running either left or right as they will find sand, pinestraw and distressed areas. Although the course offers acres of sandy areas the restoration actually eliminated many bunkers, today only 20 bunkers are present on the course. From it’s modest beginnings in 1898 Pinehurst has become the major focus of US Golf. Pinehurst is the only venue to host PGA Championship, Ryder Cup, US Mens Amateur, US Womens Amateur, PGA Tour Championship, US Senior Open, US Mens Open and in 2014 the US Womens Open.
